RollerCoaster Tycoon® Classic Review: Real Classic

RollerCoaster Tycoon is an economic strategy checking your management skills. Build your own theme park with walkways and rollecroasters, and see how people bring you the money. Download RollerCoaster Tycoon twenty years after the original release, and enjoy this immortal masterpiece!

Graphics: 4

The only flaw in the visuals is at the same times its great achievement. Gaming industry changed a lot since the original edition was published in 1999; but this remastered one handles the original with care and precision. It’s optimized for Full HD screens and runs smoothly on fresh hardware, but it looks the same way it should: all pixeled up and as retro as can be (bit not to the extent of Space Invaders).

Gameplay: 5

This game is really a classical one, and there’s a reason for it. It features a brilliant balance of change and logic, strategic and geometrical thinking. In the beginning, you enter the empty zone you need to build a theme park in. There are few elements available to build from the beginning, like walkways, trees, basins, and, of course, rollercoasters. Then you unlock more of them.

To build your park the right way, you should imagine correctly the position of your railway or rollercoaster, its entrances and exits, the way and frequency it starts, the route it follows (if it takes any), and its working routine. You define how many passengers it takes, how frequently starts and stops, and so on.

Mind what visitors think of the park you build; catering to the public is the key to success. To know what any particular visitor thinks, just click on them and find the tab that expresses feelings and thoughts. Sometimes this telepathic management can tell you a good idea.

Every aspect is highly detailed and customizable, so you can adjust the technical aspects of your facilities and manage their schedule to maximize your profit. Combining engineering and commercial thinking may seem hard; but that’s what being a rollercoaster tycoon is about.

Though the game only utilizes the mouse, you’ll need to get used to details. In the beginning, it shows you a brief tutorial on anything, including zooming in and out and selecting building sites. Simple and hard at the same time; that’s the impression. But after playing for an hour or two, you’ll feel at ease, even if you’re playing it for the first time.

Replay Value: 5

We’re writing a RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic review in 2019, two decades after its premiere, and it’s still playable. In our time of one-click arcades, a game that mobilizes your strategical thinking is hard to find, so there’s a good reason for experiencing this control of the theme park again. Now it’s compatible with modern hardware, so you won’t have to fiddle with its configuring; just download RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic and proceed straight to playing.

The Bottom Line

RollerCoaster Tycoon is quite a complicated simulator, but that’s the best about it. The game involves diverse skills and methods of thinking, from engineering to management. Yes, setting up each and every aspect is complicated; but that’s what we call a convincing simulation.
