Atlantic Fleet Game Review

Turn-based strategy games are not such a thing now as they were in the 1990s, but still, they can be great. Naval strategy is a lot about geometry and physics, so game developers have always been looking towards greatest naval campaigns. Atlantic Fleet is based on World War II history, specifically on naval conflict between Great Britain and Germany on Atlantic.

Graphics: 5

Enormous warships are all to your service, in full 3D, detailed and easy to run. System requirements seem somewhat low for 2018, but don’t expect it to be low-detailed or poorly drawn. It’s worth noticing that many scenarios involve real famous ships, and they are recreated in the slightest details. Sea is moving, the weather is changing, the sight is gorgeous.

In Options, you can adjust graphics quality right at the start, but it doesn’t take an ultramodern PC to run it at maximal settings.

Gameplay: 5

The developers recreated the most famous naval battles of World War II. Choose your side (Great Britain or Germany) and feel like a Navy Commander.

The game is turn-based, so your ships and enemy ones make moves in turn. A turn includes a move of your ship and then a shot. You can select your weapon and adjust the angle and the direction, so you can hit the target. Under challenging missions, you can call for aircraft support.

It takes a noticeable bit of calculation and getting used, but the experience is worth this, especially when you’re using a really large display.

Scenarios mirror real naval operations, so you will have fun as well as get educated; still, it’s not an “edutainment” game, it’s made for a fun first of all.

Controls: 5

Like many console games, Atlantic Fleet is still controller-oriented even on PC. All the moves and commands are explained right within the game, as you play. There is even an advanced tutorial of several simple missions to help you get familiar with it.

It seems possible to control the game from the keyboard, but it’s not as intuitive as can be. Though controls are customizable, it still deprives the game of its dynamic feeling. If you haven’t bought the Xbox controller yet, you better not hurry to try Atlantic Fleet.

Replay Value: 5

Strategy games are usually highly replayable, and Atlantic Fleet makes no exception. It’s rich in scenarios (taken mostly from real history), and it will take you long to play all of them – if you like the game even a little.

And even when you have played most of the campaigns, you can replay them with your new skills and try to do better than before. While playing, you start to feel moves, directions, fire distance and other parameters subconsciously.

Conclusion

Great reconstruction of Atlantic naval war, this game is worth your attention. Turn-based mechanics may confuse those used to RTS, but not for long. Based on calculation rather than reflex, it will make you think, and that’s another reason to try it. And – last but not least – it looks great and splendid.
